40,000 pounds of ice cream spill onto Interstate

Over the weekend, a truck carrying lots of Edy's ice cream tipped over while trying to get onto Interstate 69 in Indiana. If that wasn't bad enough, the trailer spilled open as they tried to move it off the highway. It looks like the truck driver will be ok, and oddly enough, it looks like they saved most of the ice cream too....

as one of the 10 groundbreaking innovations of the year

CLEVELAND, Dec. 20, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The yonanas® frozen fruit dessert, a healthy treat with the look and feel of soft-serve ice cream and as little as 100 calories per serving, has been selected as one of 10 finalists for the 2012 Fruit Logistica Innovation Award recognizing the most significant new fresh fruit-related product or service from around the globe.

The winner will be announced on February 10 at the Fruit Logistica trade fair in Berlin, based on a vote by more than 56,000 expected trade visitors from 125 countries. Now in its seventh year, the competition is sponsored by Messe Berline and Fruchthandel Magazine.

Made from frozen bananas and other frozen fruit, each serving of yonanas is produced by the yonanas frozen treat machine created and manufactured by Healthy Foods, LLC. The company has partnered with Dole Food Company, Inc. (NYSE: DOLE), the world's largest producer and marketer of high-quality fruits and vegetables, to increase retail distribution of the yonanas machine for the home as well as accelerate the development of a new line of commercial yonanas makers to be used in restaurants, schools, hospitals, hotels and other venues. PreGel's New Products "Twist Traditional Up"

New products offer affordable multifaceted concepts for business owners

CONCORD, N.C., Dec. 13, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- PreGel AMERICA, the U.S. subsidiary of the largest specialty dessert ingredient manufacturer in the world, today announced the anticipated arrival of three new frozen desserts and beverages: Cafettone™; Fruittone™; and Yogurttone™. Having caused a stir at industry shows and events across the U.S. for over a year, business owners will be delighted to learn how the frozen delicacies will provide a variety of options to diversify their business in a simple, efficient and cost-effective way.

Utilizing the newest technology in the industry, the new frozen desserts and beverages are shelf-stable, instant ready-to-use powdered mixes that require only the addition of water or milk to produce Cafettone™, Fruittone™ and Yogurttone™. The sugar, flavor, stabilizers and emulsifiers are already blended into the mixes to ensure consistency while maintaining the highest quality standards in taste and texture. For business owners, profit margins are high with low overhead costs.

The desserts are quickly and easily produced in an affordable tabletop machine similar to a slush machine, but with a stronger freezing compressor to chill the blends at or below -7 degrees C (20 degrees F) to create a product similar to soft serve in texture and gelato in flavor. The machine's freezing cycle is typically 45-60 minutes and includes a standby feature for the overnight storage of blends.

PreGel AMERICA summarizes the new frozen desserts and beverages as:

  • Cafettone™ – A creamy concoction made with one of three Cafettone™ flavors [Mascarpone (Italian Cream Cheese), Fior di Latte (Sweetened Milk), Chocolate or Salted Caramel] and a shot of espresso or coffee.
  • Fruittone™ – On the lighter side, Fruittone™ is a concept that offers the refreshing fruit flavors of Strawberry, Pink Grapefruit and Pear with a shot of berry or fruit juice for the ultimate frozen dessert drink.
  • Yogurttone™ – Yogurt is big business today and PreGel's Yogurttone™ mix prepares a delightful tart frozen yogurt-style dessert and beverage perfect for any hour of the day. The idea is to swirl it with a fruit juice of choice for an added flavor boost, or layer with granola for a frozen parfait.

The dessert and beverage concepts are trademarked and presented for PreGel customers to utilize as a selling tool to their consumers. PreGel offers an array of promotional support including Marketing Starter Kits featuring a point-of-purchase display, 2 sets of labels, 10 table-top point-of-sale displays and 5 floor decals. The concept will also include a website where consumers can obtain nutritional information.

"The technology of the product and affordable machines will allow any purveyor of food products to include frozen desserts in their business model with ease and efficiency," said Marco Casol, CEO and president of PreGel AMERICA. "The reason this concept works so well for so many different businesses is the B2C positioning and concepts we have created. [Another] part of the program is that we provide all the tools needed to launch this concept including everything from serveware to store signage."

The company is excited about this new endeavor and innovative product, and believes that it will change how Americans perceive frozen desserts and beverages. PreGel AMERICA's ultimate goal is to ensure owners' successful launch of the new dessert concept within their respective businesses by providing exclusive packages which include the single flavor machine, special variety packs of product and a Marketing Starter Kit. With this level of support, business owners can easily "Twist Traditional Up" while providing a unique frozen dessert and beverage option to new and existing customers.

"Frozen desserts are not just for a nightcap anymore," said Jillian Hillard, Marketing Manager at PreGel AMERICA. "Cafettone™ is a great way to start your day. We want business owners and consumers to feel good about embracing frozen desserts any time of the day."

Tasti D-Lite Acquires Planet Smoothie Franchise System

Dual-Branding Intended to Drive Growth

FRANKLIN, Tenn., Dec. 1, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Tasti D-Lite, the lower-calorie frozen dessert chain catering to health-conscious consumers has announced the acquisition of Planet Smoothie, LLC, a franchise system with more than 100 units in operation, mainly in Georgia and Florida. Planet Smoothie is a national franchisor and consumer products business which sells smoothies and all-natural snacks to health-conscious consumers. The strategic acquisition, which closed on November 30, will allow both brands to broaden product offerings, improve retail sales and accelerate unit growth through co-branding initiatives and non-traditional development opportunities.

"This acquisition presents an opportunity to combine two iconic brands to create a winning combination for both the customer and the franchisee," said Jim Amos, chief executive officer of Tasti D-Lite. "The consumer profiles of Tasti D-Lite and Planet Smoothie are very similar, so combining the two complementary brands will provide both brands an opportunity to increase the scale of the combined store network as well as sales at the store level."

Over the coming months, Tasti D-Lite products will be added to select Planet Smoothie stores and likewise, Planet Smoothie menu offerings will be made available to Tasti D-Lite locations. Tasti D-Lite's core frozen dessert products will be made available to Planet Smoothie customers utilizing self-serve machines. "We are giving our consumers even more reason to visit our stores," Amos said. "By adding a product line that enhances Planet Smoothie's menu, we are adding a new component that broadens the offering to the consumer."

This acquisition is Tasti D-Lite's latest initiative focused on increasing growth through the pursuit of non-traditional development methods. Earlier this year, the first drive-thru Tasti D-Lite location opened in Columbia, Missouri, and the first on-campus store was opened at Duke University. In addition, Tasti D-Lite introduced its first self-serve model to the brand's long-time full-serve model, and also introduced their first "store-within-a-store" location on Las Vegas Boulevard. Following this transaction, Tasti D-Lite plans to offer new franchisees the option to own and operate in a co-branded store concept, which fully integrates both brands into a unique customer experience.

"Combining these brands will add value for our franchisees, which in turn will allow us to accelerate the growth of our store network," Amos said. "We are thrilled to have acquired such a compelling brand with great promise that complements our product offering."

About Tasti D-Lite:
Since its inception in 1987, Tasti D-Lite's popularity has grown largely by word of mouth and has resulted in a huge base of raving fans who line up day and night to get their favorite guilt-free treat, available in more than 100 flavors. In 2008 the company launched its first franchise program. Since then, the company has grown to 60 locations across three countries and has already secured commitments to open more than 500 locations around the world. Tasti D-Lite is now poised for growth throughout the U.S. and around the world with plans to build a global franchise network through a combination of single- and multi-unit franchises, non-traditional locations, area developers and international master franchises. Including this transaction Tasti D-Lite expects to end 2011 with 170 locations open and operating. Tasti D-Lite is majority-owned by Snow Phipps Group, LLC, a New York based private equity firm with $1.5 billion of assets under management.
